"All Night Long (All Night)" is a hit single by American vocaliser Lionel Richie from 1983. Taken from his 2d solo anthology, Can't Slow Down (1983), it combined Richie's soulful Commodores style with Caribbean influences. This new, more dance music, pop-inspired approach proved pop, as the single reached number one on 3 Billboard charts (pop, R&B and adult contemporary).[iv] In the Uk, information technology peaked at number ii on the singles nautical chart.[5]
The song lyrics were written primarily in English language, but Richie has admitted in at least ane press interview that "African" lyrics in the song, such equally "Tom bo li de say de moi ya" and "Jambo colossal", were in fact his sui generis dialects.[half dozen] Richie has described these portions of the vocal as a "wonderful joke", written when he discovered that he lacked the time to rent a translator to contribute the foreign-language lyrics he wished to include in the song.[7]
Music video [edit]
An accompanying music video was produced by onetime Monkee and TV video pioneer Michael Nesmith and directed by Bob Rafelson.[8] [ix]
Notable uses [edit]
Richie performed the song at the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.[ten]
The song was used in the pilot episode for Miami Vice, "Blood brother'southward Keeper". While Richie was supposed to appear in the episode to sing it, he was on tour at the fourth dimension and couldn't brand it to the filming location; an unnamed ring plays the vocal in the episode.[ citation needed ]
